TekMatrix Top Albums of 2009

Damn!

What a year of music in Hip-Hop; Hell, what a year for INDIE Hip-Hop!! If you needed anymore proof on why Hip-Hop music is gaining MUCH steam, this list is proof! As always, I'm sure that many of my readers may or may not recognize some of theses artists, that is why I URGE you to take the time and check out this very unique combination of new blood and veteran talent! This selection was MUCH tougher than I thought it would be, since there were many solid releases this year, in my opinion! As always, this is not in any order, this is a respective collective!

Check out yours truly coming back on the pengame with a few interesting features on the REVAMPED defculture.org coming in Feburary, and the blog, sewer series, of course!

Let the hot mouth begin..

MOS DEFTHE ECSTATIC
Ok, this should have been Mos Def’s 2nd album, real talk! Mind the left field approach from “The New Danger”, I think he needed that album out of his system to create this release. Not that I’m saying I didn’t like that album, but “Black on Both Sides” is a classic, and it would be expected to have a wide range of reception with this release. Long story short, it looks like he went back to basics, and it resulted in a solid LP! He needs more “Madlib” In his life…

JOHN ROBINSON
WHO IS THIS MAN?
This album is a continuation from his last release, consistent formula- Dope beats, dope rhymes! Surely, this dude is part of the east coast wave that is bound to touch down sometime in 2010 (As predicted by yours truly!!).

JOE BUDDEN
PADDED ROOM
Despite a minor shortcoming, Joe Budden has released a candid and thought provoking piece of work. It's something that many fans have been waiting for, for a looooooooonnnnnnnnggggg time! Honestly, his album was probably overdue, but Def Jam probably didn't want to push this type of album from Joe Budden; Is safe to say that the indie game is treating him well???

BROTHER ALI
THE TRUTH IS HERE
Ali has been dope out the gate, but with this release, this only acted as a prelude to his other release later in the year. Truly pouring his life in his music, Ali is slowly becoming a cult following in the indie scene; he is already arguably the "Star Player" at Rhymesayers ent, putting the label on his back with 1 of his 2 releases in 2009. Honestly, this dude is a problem….

UGK
UGK 4 LIFE
If I have to explain to you why this album is on this list just on the merit of the significance of what this group did for southern hip-hop, kill yourself… seriously!!! Bun and company did a remarkable job of synthesizing Pimp's vision given the circumstances. UGK 4 Life needs no formal Pimp C tribute because the album itself is a grand testament to his legacy, R.I.P. Pimp C!

METHOD MAN & REDMAN
BLACKOUT 2
Without a doubt, the duo clearly made this album for the fans! Mind you, this is probably not at the same level lyrically as the first Blackout release, but it was great to hear some of the product influenced from the golden-era take shape once again in the group… make you wonder what if they did this in the early 2000’s, would there careers benefit from the release… just a thought

J DILLA
JAY STAY PAID
This album is straight up For Dilla lovers; a conceptually brilliant work that does Dilla's legacy justice. Most die-hard fans will embrace this work out of principle, but for those new to Dilla will appreciate

BLAQ POET
THA BLAQPRINT
Do you remember Screwball? DJ Premiers “2nd Experiment”, trying to follow up to the underground classic Group Home LP “Living Proof”, had its share of ups and downs surely, but in this case for Blaq Poet, his patience was rewarded! Premier supervised a extremely well-made and engrossing Hip Hop album. The honesty of Poet's words more than make up for any lyrical blemishes, while DJ Premier's production harkens back to golden years of Hip Hop.

LA COKA NOSTRA
A BRAND YOU CAN TRUST

Ahh.. LA COKA!! These guys have a true occult following, especially overseas! These cats truly created to their market, and in-turn gained more followers than they expected! Arguably one of the best indie sellers this year, the album is a mostly solid effort and exactly what someone would expect from a super-group of like-minded members known for high-energy music

SLAUGHTERHOUSE
SELF-TITLED

Speaking of Super-groups.....Their formula hasn't been perfected yet; but the talent, and (most importantly) the will are there, which is a promising indicator of things to come! I was honestly expecting more from this release, especially on the production, but DEFINETLY one of the best efforts this year! If they get the right team of producers for the next release, oh boy………..!!!!

JAY-Z
THE BLUEPRINT 3
You know, This album grew on me! I mean I heard this album plenty of times before it came out, but I never LISTENED to it. BP 3 is a classic example of growth as an artist! Mind the statue of Jay-Z, I felt he needed to release this album to prove something to himself. Sure, this is not the best release in the Blueprint series, but it stacks up 2009. Speaking of which, Jay said it best- “Hov on that new shit/ Niggas like ‘how come?’/ Niggas want my old shit/ Buy my old album.”

RAEKWON
ONLY BUILT 4 CUBAN LINX II
What more can you say about this release??? Arguably delivering the best Wu-Tang member solo album since 2000’s “Supreme Clientele”, you can’t deny that this album at least met the expectations that Die-Hard Fans engulfed in the storyline created by Raekwon. Makes you wonder why he even dropped “Immobilarity” in the first place....

WALE
ATTENTION DEFICIT
With Attention Deficit, Wale hoped to be “everybody’s problem,” but it’s still to be determined if the “new” spitter is worthy of the hype he’s worked for thus far. I mean, the album was decent, but after getting BODIED on that BET Hip-Hop award cipher, I think its time to change the marketing plan

 THE CLIPSE
TILL THE CASKET DROPS
After dropping two arguable classics, both of which could be bumped damn near front-to-back, it’s astonishing to see one of The Clipse' albums reach such dizzying highs and perilous lows. Nevertheless, a pretty solid release by the duo.

FABOLOUS
LOSO'S WAY
It's not the classic album he claims to release every time he drops, but it's a damn solid and cohesive effort. Nearly each track conveys effectively, both in subject matter and production, the lifestyle and attitude Fab is trying to portray.
