Soloange Knowles: ""Shoes! I'm All About The Shoes!"

Soloange Knowles, was featured on Refinery29 talking about her fashion inspirations, new album, funky afro, and being compared to big sister Beyonce.

           Who are your style heroes?
“My mom in the ’70s and ’80s! She was a bad b*tch. Sex and the City totally jacked her steez on the camels. I have a pic of her on a camel ride in Egypt in the ’80s serving the hell out of that desert! Also, Diana Ross, The Fela Kuti Queens, Björk, ’70s-era Chaka Khan, Chloë Sevigny, ’90s Erykah Badu.”

What’s your secret style weapon?
“Shoes! I’m all about the shoes! I order a ton of them online and play with my entire wardrobe until I find the right shoe. Unfortunately, so many people get it right from the head until the ankles. The shoe is very important. I can’t even fu*k with you if your shoe game is slacking.”

Tell us a little bit about working on the new album
“I went up to Santa Barbara, found this house on five acres in the mountains and invited a bunch of amazing musicians to come live there with me for a month and just experiment. We woke up around 10 a.m. and made music until midnight, all of course while drinking good wine, picking avocados from the trees outside to make guacamole, and maybe enjoying a joint or two. I left the process a little crazy, but I really feel like I came into my own.”

Musically, how is it going to be different from your previous records?
“’80s jams for sure! Early Chaka Khan, ’80s Janet Jackson, S.O.S. Band, Prince, and of course the great Michael Jackson! We went extremely natural and raw when it came down to the production. Blowing into beer bottles, playing flower vases, tapping on chairs with pencils, and even recording a house party we had for Memorial Day as a sample. My previous record was extremely inspired by ’60s Motown, and was very conceptual and polished. With this record, it was completely opposite. We kind of partied our way through an album. It was all about letting loose, and the boogie was very important.”

What inspired the bold new ‘do? You mentioned you can no longer hide with that hair, has it changed the way you see yourself?
“When I was recording, I was staying in a house with five guys and two showers. I knew there would be a shower wait everyday and with my natural cropped hair, it’s mandatory that I wash it otherwise it gets stuck to my head like glue! I wanted to get something that I could literally roll out of bed without looking nuts. I watched so many Chaka Khan YouTube videos and became sort of obsessed with her during the process. I went to my stylist and said ‘Give me the fro.’ I walk differently now, sing differently; This hair has spirit and soul.”

You’ve got such unique style, would you ever consider being involved in the family fashion business, Dereon?
“Why thank you very much! It’s funny you ask because I initially was involved as the spokesperson, but the clothes just didn’t reflect my personal style and I decided to hand that over. That’s the great thing about my family. We work together so closely that if something’s not working out, we can be honest about it and there won’t be any grudges or issues. I wrote a couple of songs on my sister’s last album and if there’s a line she doesn’t like, she changes it and we keep on moving. I will say though, they did just do a bedding line that I am extremely in love with and I was like, ‘Can I model that… in my house?’”

You mentioned being inspired by Janet Jackson’s “Pleasure Principle” video. Janet was a famous younger sister who really carved out her own identity and sound. Do you ever feel you have to work harder to differentiate yourself from your older sis?
“If anything, I feel like if I didn’t have a sister who was a huge star, no one would think twice about how I look, because they would have no one to compare it to. I would just be another gal who wears loads of vintage or counts Grace Jones as inspiration. But because I’m Beyoncé’s sister, I’m an easy target to say, ‘There’s no way those two had the same parents, and have one be naturally this way…this has to be a ploy for her to appear cool!’ It makes me want to pull out pictures of five-year-old me next to nine-year-old her wearing a tutu over polka dot stockings and an old scarf over my head. It would be so much easier for me to put on a little black dress, straighten my hair, and sing about dancing in the club, but it’s not my job to prove anything. I’m here to make music, to inspire myself. I’m not selling my likability, I’m sharing my journeys. If you don’t like it, believe it’s real, or understand it…then keep my name out of your mouth.”

Shots Fired: 50 cent & Diddy .

During his show at the House of Blues, 50 decided not only to diss Diddy but also his nemesis Rick Ross.

“How many of ya'll like Puffy?” 50 asked. “F*ck Puffy and you can tell him I said it.”

In addition to dissinghis rivals, 50 also dropped a bomb on label mate and homeboy Tony Yayo:
“If Yayo don't drop a hit, he's out of here,” 50 continued. “I ain't playing with these n*ggas.”

In attempt to show he is serious about his “Love Movement”, Diddy responded to 50's shots at the 2010 BET Awards stating that
“hating is for suckers”. But the shots didn't stop there:
“If you are hating, you're a sucka and your breath stinks,” Diddy said.
“We ain't hatin' we're congratulating, so get on our level and you know who I'm talking to you hatin' a** crab.

Ne-Yo Confirms He's Going to Be a Daddy.... Again.

Ne-Yo and girlfriend Monyetta Shaw are expecting their first child together.
EBONY sat down with the singer-songwriter at a super exclusive photoshoot planned to help promote his upcoming album Libra Scale. Ne-Yo, who is preparing to attend the ASCAP Awards Friday night in Beverly Hills, talked about how he had traveled home to Atlanta to get some news about the baby.
Surprise! He had to come home so he could make the first ultrasound visit with his girlfriend. There’s no word on the sex of the baby because the tiny tot curled up in a ball, leading Ne-Yo to joke that his future progeny is “stubborn.” But, he added, “They didn’t get that one from me.”
“I am 30 and I do have my first child on the way, and I’m very, very, very excited about that,” he tells EBONY. “It’s a New Year’s baby and I’m just in a really good place right now.”

He took care of his ex-girlfriend's son like his own, until she started demanding outrages amounts of child support and a paternity test proved someone else was the father.  Congrats Ne-Yo!

Chris Brown Performs MJ Tribute at 2010 BET Awards!

I've been saying for the last year that a perfect Michael Jackson Tribute has to be done by Chris Brown, and he did just that. Bringing the audience to there feet and embodying MJ moves, he ended with an attempt to sing "Man In The Mirror", but was overwhelmed with tears.

We all know that the tears were from more than the death of Michael Jackson, but his own personal trials and tribulations throughout his career.  Breezy has jumping though hoops to regain his fans, the public support and trust. Its about time for Chris Brown to be forgiven.

Drake Responds To Lil Kim, and Talks About Lil Wayne!

The highlights:

On Lil Kim calling him a Punk P:
I really don’t care… sometimes I get a lil impulsive when you start talking about the people I love. You can say whatever about me, I’ll never respond to it, like I’ll never react to it, but if you start talking about the people I love then I do get a little bit more reactive and that’s all that happened there, Nicki’s got records climbing the charts and today Thank Me Later is in stores, so it’s just about relevant people today…

On his relationship with Maliah Michele:
Maliah’s great. She’s a wonderful person who I was blessed to work and have part of the greatest video of my career to date and huh just an amazing person that I’m honored to know. I love her a lot. She’s dope.

On first week predictions:
It’s not about the specific number, You can’t tell me these young people don’t matter… Music is not dead…. You gotta connect with people… Give them a reason to wake up and wanna spend $10 on hearing your story… as far as the numbers, it’s whatever.

On visiting Lil Wayne in Rikers:
It was sad, because today was a day I wanted Wayne with me bad. He believed in me before anybody… I miss him.. It’s sad to see him in that situation… And him not being able to record music… I can see it in his eyes, it’s a painful thing.

Complex Mag: Dream "Love King" Album Preview

the-dream-love-king-artwork-lead

It’s almost like R&B isn’t even a singular genre anymore. Singers borrow more hip-hop swag than ever and rappers continue to try flexing their vocal chords (take the last album we previewed, for example). But if one guy is trying to keep rhythm and blues alive, it’s The-Dream. His previous two projects are often hailed as modern classics and rank as personal favorites around Complex, so naturally, there’s a lot of anticipation for Love King. Terius Nash’s third and possibly final LP doesn’t hit stores until June 29, but we got the chance to hear it early. Keep reading to check out our album preview and see if it lives up to the hype…

Drake Opens Up About His Crush On Nicki Minaj

Young Money stars Nicki Minaj and Drake are two of the hottest MCs in hip-hop, and their relationship has some thinking that the pair are hooking up in ways beyond a label affiliation. The stars were candid about their feelings for each other in recent interviews with MTV2's "Sucker Free Countdown" — and addressed rumors that their relationship isn't strictly platonic.

"Me and Nicki have a really playful relationship," Drake told DJ Envy. "When I was on tour ... I saw Nicki for the first time and, like, literally fell in love. She had this snap-back hat on that said 'Minaj.' She used to wear that every single day. She was like a theater student and she was so cold at rapping."

last week after Lil' Kim said some untoward things about her — said that before breaking through, he had to contend with her somewhat icy demeanor. "I remember one of the first nights that we were out in Miami and I went to Jerry's [Famous Deli]. I was like [to Minaj], '

"You want food, you hungry?,' and she was like, 'Yeah, I want some food.' I was like, 'I'm in, we gon' eat food together.' I came to her door and she took the food and shut the door in my face! I was just like, 'Man, this is gonna be a long road for us.' "

But Drake maintains that his feelings for her have always been genuine. "I've always really, actually, really had a crush on her, always really loved her, and she's always just looked at me as, like, her little brother."

After humping on her a** like that on stage last week, there was no hiding his feelings.

Common Inteview With MyFox Chicago.

Students at three Chicago high schools today went to an assembly that they'll remember long after graduation. Rapper Kanye West, along with fellow Chicagoans Common and Lupe Fiasco, performed at Marshall, Farragut and Julian high schools as part of the Kanye West Foundation's third annual "Stay in School" event. The performance rewarded schools whose students worked to improve their grades, attendance and behavior.

Words of wisdom. Damn I love this man.

"New York State of Mind" Replaces Frank Sinatra "New York New York" At The Belmont Stakes.

Jay-Z's "Empire State Of Mind" will replace Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York" at the 142nd running of the Belmont Stakes.
The New York Racing Association said it will play "Empire State of Mind" as the horses are brought out on the track for tomorrow's race.

Jigga's track is featured on his latest platinum selling album Blueprint III and features Alicia Keys.
Sinatra's version has been played since 1997. Prior to that, a vaudeville tune called "Sidewalks of New York" was the race's main song.
Teenage singer Jasmine Villegas will perform Jay and Alicia's version.
The Yankees also previously took a liking to the song and played it throughout their champonship run.

Khloe Kardashian 2 Months Preganant.

For a minute there I actually forgot all about the Khloe and Lamar Kardashian publicity stunt  marriage, but I guess now we should be expecting to see her everywhere since she is now reportedly seven month pregnant. According to RadarOnline

"“Khloe was inspired by Kourtney having a baby,” a source close to the family tells RadarOnline.com.   “Lamar is happy and ecstatic” about having a baby with Khloe and  the family is elated by the news. “Khloe is having cravings of fruit and ice cream,” They’re really happy, but Lamar is a little weary of exposing his baby on TV. He already doesn’t like his life being played out for everyone to see eight months of the year."

Lamar has two children with Liza Morales, who has been critical of her ex and Khloe in various interviews.

Sure Lamar you don't like Attention *side eyes*  I wonder if Khloe ever got the chance to meet his other two children yet. But anyway Congrats.
